Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta,  (August 27, 1910September 5, 1997) was an famous Indian nun who spent her whole life for helping the poor in india.

 

Early Life and Work

 

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje. Her family was of Roman Catholic Albanian descent. 

 

She felt strongly the call of God when she was in 12 years old and  decided to help the poor people. She joined the Sisters of Loreto which is a community of nuns while she was 18.  She became a nun after she had trained in Dublin. She took the name "Teresa" after St. Teresa of Lisieux, patroness of the Missionaries.

 

Once she came to take care a half-dead woman lying in  hospital. She stayed with her until that woman died. From that moment, she decided to spend the rest of her life to help the poorest of the poor in India, name of "Saint of the Gutters" was starting from that time

   

Servant Leadership

 

Mother Teresa would like to meet anyone, no matter they are dying or having disease, she just want them to die in peace.. For over 50 years, she worked very hard for helping the poor and this movement, she won her respect throughout the world.

 

Mother Teresa's work has been recognised all around the world. She  received many awards, Some of famous awards are 

  • Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) 
  • The Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972).
  • She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards

Mother Teresa’s health going bad since 1980’s. She had suffered heart problems twice. In April 1997, Mother Teresa fell and broke her collar bone. In the same year, she suffered from malaria. She then had heart operation, and it was clear that her health was going worse. On March 13, 1997 she stepped down from the head of Missionaries of Charity and died on September 5, 1997.
